It never fails to amaze me the type of mail solicitations that work.
The latest one I received was from a “Payment Processing Center” and included a check for $3.50. Before I ran down to cash this unexpected windfall, I took a closer look at the disclaimer on the back of the check. It informed me that if I deposit this check, I will hereto after be enrolled in their valuable search engine listing service at a cost of $79 per year. You may be wondering why I refer to these solicitations as ones that “work”. Well, it’s just like spam; if spam didn’t work, most if not all spammers would have given up by now. But it does work and these mail solicitations work also.
The most notorious of these is from the Internet Listing Service Corporation. They send out solicitations to website domain owners with what looks like a bill or invoice and attempt to get them to pay between $35 to $95 dollars for submitting their website to some large number of major search engines. Oh, and somewhere in fine print is the disclaimer:
This is not an invoice. This is a solicitation. You are under no obligation to make any payments on account of this offer unless you accept this offer.
The business model in both of these schemes are numbers games. Send out enough and you will have a small percentage of recipients to mistake it for a bill and send payment.
It wouldn’t be difficult for anyone to set and run one of these schemes. It just takes a little know-how and no conscience.
So why does this matter to you? A good website design company will makes sure that your site is designed to be indexed by search engines and will manually submit your site to the major search engines. Most, if not all search engine will not allow automatic submission techniques. And if you think anyone is going to manually submit your website to thousands of search engines, I have some quality real estate bout 10 miles south of Destin, Florida I would like to sell you - real cheap!
Most search engines are already “crawling” the web and will eventually find your site. Although some like Ask.com will only find your site if you have an inbound link from a site that they already have indexed. For the most part, search engine submission is not necessary.
Remember, if it sounds to good to be true…..
